Cell FAQ

Cell phone messaging system allows you to send a text message from your cell phone to a license plate. If that license plate is registered in the system, the member will receive the message in their inbox on their account. If the member has their cell phone listed they will also receive the text message directly to their cell phone instantly. This is a great feature to send to someone if you are traveling.

How to add your cell phone number?
Login to your account and click on “Profile” on the menu. Scroll down to where it says “cell phone email”. Click on the “edit” button. Most cell phones are issued an email address which is normally your phone number followed @ and your phone company's domain name. For example if your phone number is 908-555-1234 and you have Verizon service your email will be 9085551234@vtext.com The best way to find out your cell phone's email address is to send an email from your cell phone to your regular email address to see what return address is. Enter that information above.

How to send a cell phone message?
Sending a cell phone message is simple and fast.
Text:  s@searchplates.com

Message format is the following:
License Plate State abbreviation Message (under 100 characters)

Example:
ABC123 NJ You have a very nice car, contact me!

How much does it cost?
SearchPlates is 100% free and we never charge you for sending a message through our system. Sending a cell phone message through SearchPlates is the same as sending a text message so your standard text messaging rates will apply from your cell phone provider. Contact your cell phone provider to find out how much they charge you for sending a text message.

Can I respond to the message I receive from my cell phone?
At the moment, you can only receive messages and send messages out. There is no reply feature to send directly back to the sender. The message you receive will appear in your account inbox and you will be able to view the sender. You will be able to respond to the sender through the online SearchPlates email system.

If you receive a message back that says (Registration requirement) “You are currently not subscribed to cell phone messages. Visit SearchPlates.com and on your profile page enter your cell phone address."
This means that either you have not added your cell phone to your profile page, or the cell phone number you entered is invalid. (text your regular email address from your cell phone to confirm you are using the correct cell phone email address).

What happens if the license plate I text is not a member?
If the license plate you are sending a text message to is not a member of SearchPlates.com the message will go into your “Pending Signup” folder which is located on the profile page. You will be able to monitor when that license plate signs up and send your message then.
